Website Performance Optimization Techniques

A practical performance checklist covering images, code, caching, delivery, measurement and sustainable maintenance.

Website performance shapes user experience, conversion and search visibility. It should be designed into the system from the beginning and monitored after launch.

Optimize media

  • Resize images to their rendered dimensions and compress them responsibly.
  • Prefer WebP or AVIF when browser support and the content pipeline allow it.
  • Use responsive sources and lazy-load media below the fold.
  • Avoid autoplay video and oversized background assets on constrained devices.

Ship less code

Remove unused CSS and JavaScript, split bundles by route and delay non-essential work. Minification helps, but the largest gains usually come from avoiding code that the page does not need.

Improve delivery

  • Enable modern compression such as Brotli or gzip.
  • Use long-lived caching for versioned static assets.
  • Serve assets through an appropriate CDN when audiences are geographically distributed.
  • Preload only genuinely critical resources; excessive hints compete for bandwidth.

Protect the critical rendering path

Inline the minimum critical styles when useful, load the rest without blocking first paint and use font-display to avoid invisible text. The first screen should not wait for code needed much later.

Measure real outcomes

Combine laboratory tools such as Lighthouse with field data and Core Web Vitals. Set performance budgets for page weight, requests and interaction cost, then include them in release checks. Optimization is a continuous product practice, not a one-time cleanup.
